Why are big cats more likely interested in animal prey than human prey?

I heard that when lions and tigers are hungry, when they see human prey and animal prey they are likely to go for the animal. Why is that? I know some people have been mauled by big cats but it's not everyday they do that compared to them mauling zebras etc.
